Halloween - do you love it or hate it?

Either way, it seems you can’t get away from it anymore. The shops are full of it and where I live there are Halloween events all week.

My mum hates it - she sees it as just another example of the americanisation of Australia with excessive consumption of lollies!

I like it.

It’s fun.

It’s an opportunity to have a chat with our neighbours.

And Luca loves it.

Luca has always loved dressing up. Add lollies to that and Halloween is one of his favourite days of the year!

Our participation in Halloween started slowly. A couple of years ago, we were gifted a box of decorations before I had completely decided on my stance on Halloween.

This past weekend Luca begged to get more decorations. So with a quick trip to Aldi we’ve added to the collection. Four years in and we have fully embraced all things Halloween.

This year, we’ve also had a shift in costumes—gone is the super cute matching pirate costume Luca dressed up in with a mate last year. This Thursday, Luca will be walking around with a fake blood-splattered mask and toy chainsaw...I’m a little torn, I would love something a little less gory, but he is so excited that he came up with it “all by himself”.

And if you’ve read my previous post about “freedoms and responsibilities” you’ll know that Luca has been spending more time out and about in our neighbourhood without us. And this Halloween he’ll head out trick or treating with a friend. Freedom!!

I’ll be at home greeting all the trick-or-treaters who stop by our house, with my spider-shaped bowl full of freddos and lollies. I love seeing all the costumes and the quick chats with accompanying local parents. The afternoon connects up our neighbourhood like no other day.
